The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Synopsis:

Blackbyrd Myoozik Calgary Presents: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

An angelically beautiful Catherine Deneuve was launched to stardom by this dazzling musical heart-tugger from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by Nino Castelnuovo. When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer Michel Legrand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.

Santa Sangre

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Santa Sangre (1989)

A former circus boy, now an asylum inmate, is haunted by childhood trauma and his fanatical, armless mother. Santa Sangre is a surreal eruption of madness, religion, and Freudian nightmare—equal parts performance and possession.

Jodorowsky’s cult classic fuses spectacle with spiritual crisis, turning horror into catharsis. It’s a fever dream of transformation and control, mirroring a deeply Mexican collision of trauma, identity, and myth.

House

Synopsis:

Globe Cinema Presents: House (1977)

How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s indescribable 1977 movie House (Hausu)? As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava? Any of the above will do for this hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house cat, a bloodthirsty piano, and other ghoulish visions, all realized by Obayashi via mattes, animation, and collage effects.

Equally absurd and nightmarish, House might have been beamed to Earth from some other planet.

Body Heat - Poster

Body Heat

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Body Heat (1981)

What does one do after writing mega-blockbusters The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark back to back? If you’re director Lawrence Kasdan, you throw a curveball and direct a sub-genre-defining neo-noir erotic thriller.

Set in sweltering South Florida, the film’s noir elements unravel in a manner heavily inspired by Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity. Like many classic American noirs, our main character, played by William Hurt, meets an irresistible woman and soon finds himself in a fiery plot. In this case, that woman is Kathleen Turner in her iconic feature film debut. Her character, Matty Walker, is an explosive update of the femme fatale archetype, juxtaposed splendidly against William Hurt’s Ned, who is a classical noir protagonist.

Ned can’t escape the sweaty South, and he can’t escape his attractions. Can he beat the (body) heat and escape his fatal flaw? Find out at the first film of Calgary Cinematheque’s Summer Heat series.

Genre: Crime, Drama

Director: Lawrence Kasdan
Stars: William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Richard Crenna
Running time: 1 hr 53 min
Rating: 14A (Nudity, Sexual Content)

Dog Day Afternoon - Poster

Dog Day Afternoon

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

The second film of Calgary Cinematheque’s Summer Heat series is also the second film to allude to the movie’s heat directly in its title. Set on a hot summer day in Brooklyn, this crime thriller is based upon a true story. A heist goes wrong, and all of a sudden two thieves (Al Pacino and John Cazale) are stuck holding hostages in a sweltering bank.

The heat directly reflects the characters’ desperation. Temperature even becomes a key point in the strategic standoff between the cops and robbers. Pacino’s sweat-soaked performance is one of his finest. The film is admirably directed by maestro Sidney Lumet. He controls massive crowds of extras surrounding the bank as precisely as he does close-ups of Pacino’s twitchy, drenched face, as he frantically schemes his way out of the mess he’s found himself in.

Of the film’s six Academy Award nominations, only screenwriter Frank Pierson was recognized with a golden statue for his work. However, in a year that also featured Jaws, Barry Lyndon, and Nashville losing Best Picture, Dog Day Afternoon can comfortably place itself amongst the classics of one of the strongest release years in cinema history.

Genre: Crime, Drama

Director: Sidney Lumet
Stars: Al Pacino, John Cazale, Penelope Allen
Running time: 1 hr 53 min
Rating: 14A

Do the Right Thing - Poster

Do the Right Thing

Synopsis:

Calgary Cinematheque Presents: Do the Right Thing (1989)

An early scene of summer levity in Do the Right Thing is scored by a Steel Pulse song. The groovy rhythm matches what we are seeing on screen, but the lyrics heed a warning of what is to come — you can’t stand the heat.

Spike Lee’s masterpiece captures the hottest day of the summer turning “everyday” class and racial tensions into a political pressure cooker that is still as relevant in 2025 as it was in 1989. The camera moves, and the performers shine with a vibrancy that other filmmakers have been chasing for over thirty years, to no avail.

Under-heralded at the Academy Awards (two nominations, zero wins), this movie’s reputation has only grown with age. The 2022 BFI Sight and Sound Poll placed this film at #24 on its list of the Greatest Films of All Time. The film is passionate, vibrant, insightful, tragic, and authentic. Don’t miss your chance to see Do the Right Thing on the big screen!

Genre: Comedy, Drama

Director: Spike Lee
Stars: Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee
Running time: 2 hr 00 min
Rating: 14A (Coarse Language)
